Opal Play

Intent

At Heathcote, we believe that play is a fundamental part of a child’s development and wellbeing. Our intention through the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme is to significantly improve the quality of play for all children by providing rich, engaging, and inclusive opportunities during playtimes. We recognise that play is essential not only for physical health but also for emotional, social, and cognitive development. Through OPAL, we aim to create a play culture where all children can explore, imagine, collaborate, take risks, and experience joy and freedom in their own unique ways. Our vision is for every child to have access to high-quality play every day, regardless of age, ability, or background.

Implementation

We have embedded the OPAL principles across our school by developing our outdoor environments, policies, and staff practices to prioritise play. This includes introducing a wide variety of open-ended resources, creating zoned play spaces, and training staff to become Play Champions who support, supervise, and celebrate children's play without directing it. Our play offer encourages creativity, independence, and problem-solving through self-directed play that evolves with the children’s interests. Children are trusted and empowered to make decisions about how they play, with a strong emphasis on risk-benefit thinking and inclusion. Regular reflection and input from pupils help us continue to evolve and improve the play provision.

Impact

The impact of OPAL at Heathcote is seen in the increased happiness, engagement, and resilience of our pupils. Children are more active, confident, and collaborative, showing improved social skills and emotional regulation through their play experiences. Behaviour at lunchtime has become more positive and purposeful, as children have meaningful, stimulating opportunities to explore and express themselves. Pupils report greater enjoyment and ownership of their playtimes, and this sense of freedom and responsibility translates into increased wellbeing and a stronger sense of community. Staff have observed improved focus and readiness to learn after break times, supporting better outcomes across the curriculum. Through OPAL, we are not only transforming playtimes—we are enriching the whole school experience and equipping our children with skills for life.
